This volume inquires into the evolution of narrative prose structures in a period in which traditional idealisms had proved obsolete and a generally inchoate intellectual climate and debilitating material conditions were prevalent for most creative writers. The emphasis here is on the frequently experimental approach to narration in that period, with particular attention being paid to prose techniques springing from an acute awareness of differentialism and hence largely characterised by a fundamentally ironic stance.
