The use of an alphabetic script links the Jewish, Christian and Muslim cultures in the Middle Ages. There have always been intensive interrelationships between the religions of these cultures, inter alia through translations of important (sacred) texts. Cultural transmissions such as these also involved conflicts of translation, as they introduced reference texts which were binding on religion, culture and law and thus excluded other reference texts. Karl Bertau inquires into the reasons and effects of these processes and examines the forms of cultural radiation in the context of the history of literature, religion, society and the economy.
Karl Bertau ist emeritierter Ordinarius für Germanische und Deutsche Philologie (bis 1993 an der Universität Erlangen) und Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.
