Because of its particular bracketing of image and text, visual poetry has been accompanied by the formulation of theories from its very beginnings. Reflections on visuality can be found back in antique scholia, commentaries of medieval authors and baroque poetics, while in modern times documents can be found for example in the manifestos of the avant-garde and neo-avant-garde. This research project, conceived on a trans-epochal and trans-national scale, provides access to the most important theoretical texts on intermediality by reproducing original texts, providing German translations and commentaries, and evaluating them for recent theoretical debates.
